The Sisterhood Diaries

The End.

After a year of sharing our stories with all of you, we are bringing The Sisterhood Diaries to an end.

Blogging is a lifestyle we have learned to love and fit into our lives with pride and passion. But unfortunately, sometimes the very London lives we love to blog about left us little time to spare for the actual blogging. We always promised ourselves that if blogging ever became a task, instead of a pleasure, we’d give it a break. So that’s what we’re doing.

Thank you to everyone that ever read, viewed, and/or guest-starred on The Sisterhood Diaries :) . You have all made it an unforgettable experience.

Coffee Cupping Class

Last Wednesday, I had the pleasure of treating my good friend Qasim to a belated Birthday evening. After much thought and consideration, I had planned the perfect evening full of  all our favourite things — good coffee, incredible wine, and delicious food!

Both of us as self-professed coffee snobs, so when I heard about Ozone Coffee‘s monthly Coffee Cupping master-classes I knew I’d found the perfect date for us. Ozone Coffee is an award-winning specialty New Zealand cafe on Leonard Street in Shoreditch and dedicated supplier to high-profile venues including Moro, Morito, Gelupo, etc. The class is every first Wednesday of the month at 6pm and in 90 minutes, the talented team behind Ozone Coffee talk you through the sourcing, roasting, brewing, and cupping of their prized coffees before letting you find your favourite tastes and take home your own bag of complimentary beans (they’ll even grind them in store for you — now that’s what I call service!).

Different brewing methods, including the Aeropress, V60 filter, Ice Drip, and this awesome science-room contraption.

After getting a tour of the shop and a science class on all the extraordinarily different brewing methods — including the Aeropress, V60 filter, Ice Drip, and the awesome boiling contraption above — we got our clipboards ready for a professional cupping class.

  • First, we’d give each cup a shake and a sniff to identify the sweet, spicy, nutty, citrusy, lemony, chocolatey, notes in each.
  • Then, we’d add the steaming water and sniff again because the ‘wet’ smell will evolve differently from the ‘dry’ smell.
  • Lastly, we’d part the surface ‘crust’ with a spoon and slurp little sips to swish them around in our mouths before spitting back out and making notes on our clipboard. It reminded me so much of wine tasting!

All of them were so uniquely fragrant and flavoursome, and everyone had a different favourite.

Ozone Coffee sell, brew, and serve all of the coffee we tested, even the ice drip which only produces one sweet drop of coffee nectar at a time!

As  little souvenir, I also got Qasim the ‘London Coffee Guide’– the perfect little summary of all of London’s trendiest and tastiest independent coffee cafes. I’ve definitely passed through a fair few and continue to scout them out in avoidance of the Starbucks on every corner!

If you’re a coffee-lover/addict/experimenter/beginner, I can’t recommend the class enough! Not only will it give you the chance to uncover your own flavour-profile, it’ll give you a complimentary caffeine kick to conquer that mid-week slump. Book your tickets on Eventbrite now!

Chez Elles

Last Wednesday, I treated my best friend Qasim to a birthday dinner at my favourite new local French bistro — Chez Elles! This rave-reviewed charming little bistro has been on my list for a while since it’s quite close to home, but I just hadn’t had the right occasion. Thank goodness Wednesday night was the right night, because this local gem can simply not be neglected any longer!

The cozy dining room is decorated with the quirkiest mix of french art, pops of romantic red, rustic wooden tables with checkered table-cloths, and a gorgeous flower-woven garden throne that I was lucky enough to make my royal seat for the evening.

We started with complimentary bread to dip into the creamy starter of scallops with mushrooms, prawns and white wine in a shell. But most importantly, I fell head over heels in love with their sweet, smooth white wine. Oh, that glass of Pinot Blanc absolutely made my evening! I’ll admit I actually emailed the Chez Elles team afterwards to get the details and got a lovely reply confirming it was a Pinot Blanc from Chateau de la Morandiere, 2011 — incredible.

My throne!

We were unanimous on the main; we both couldn’t resist the Lemon with hollandaise sauce on a bed of garden vegetables. I had mine without hollandaise (darn dairy-intolerance) but it didn’t matter because the sole was so soft it melted in my mouth, and the crisp crunchy vegetables provided the perfect contrasting texture and savoury taste.

I can’t wait to go back, and back again, and back again! It’s a little oasis on the busy, bustling Brick Lane for East-London foodies and wine lovers alike.
